What Is COVID Anxiety?
Sometimes called pandemic anxiety, it is an intense fear and heightened level of worry about the coronavirus. Many people are experiencing intense levels of stress and anxiety resulting from COVID. It can come from various places such as:
- Fear of losing someone
- Fear of getting sick
- Anxiety over minimizing exposure risks
- Worrying about every symptom they have
- Feeling uncontrollable negative thoughts
COVID anxiety makes it difficult to be productive. It can also make it hard for you to live your life and engage with people that can help you through these difficult times. If you are struggling, reach out for help from an anxiety treatment program.
How to Cope with Pandemic Anxiety
If you feel anxiety as a result of COVID, there are several things you can do right now to get to a better level of mental health. First, recognize the truth in every situation. At this moment, are you at risk? Do you have real symptoms of this disease? If right now you are okay, try to stop thinking about the condition. Worry does not help you make better decisions but puts you at risk for making poor decisions.
Work to stay informed about the virus, but don’t obsess over it. That is, avoid using social media throughout the day and instead check in once a day. Turn off the TV to give your brain the time it needs to process the information being presented to you. If you start to feel overwhelmed, step away from all media.
Talk to your doctor about COVID anxiety and get help from a mental health treatment center. They can help you to stay healthy, but they can also tell you how to be realistic about your current risks. Sometimes it can help to know that you don’t have underlying conditions or that you are doing everything you can to stay healthy, including washing your hands, staying out of crowds, and staying home as often as possible.
Finally, make sure you stay connected with people who you care about often. Pandemic anxiety may worsen when you do not have friends and family to speak to and work with to understand COVID. You cannot control COVID, but you can control your ability to reach out to your family over the phone, through driveway greetings, and even through video chatting.
